Stability

Four-wheel buggies with their centre of gravity balanced by your child's weight in the seat, are typically more stable than three-wheelers. Three-wheel buggies are nevertheless worth considering since they can take on anything from rough terrain to busy streets.

Some models come with a lockable wheel that can offer stability on rough terrain. Certain models can be used with an additional buggy or seat, should you decide to grow your family.

If you're planning to take your three-wheeled bike off the paved tracks, it's worth choosing one that has tyres with air in them (also called pneumatic tyres) that can withstand the most difficult terrain. These tyres will need periodic pumping, but will be much more durable than tyres made of solid rubber and are more likely to be puncture-proof. You should look for one with an adjustable front wheel that is locked to assist you on difficult terrains.

When folded, three-wheelers may be more bulky than four-wheeled buggies due to the single front wheel. Check that the model you select fits inside your car's boot and can be set up in a straight line if needed. Certain models can fold with one hand and are freestanding when collapsed. This can make them more compact in boot spaces that are smaller.

A quality three-wheel pushchair will handle most terrains, from busy streets to forest tracks. It's important to think about the purpose you'll use for your day-to-day use. If you'll be running the school run, it should be able to cope with steep kerbs and slopes. If you're planning to run on it, ensure it has a swivelling'stretch front wheel' that is locked.
